Making and letting

The causative says someone makes or lets another person do something. Context, and helper verbs, tell you which one it is.

Making it

Every verb has one

These behave like group 2 verbs. Casually, some people also use forms ending in -asu or -sasu.

GroupChangeExample
Group 1final -u becomes -aseru書く → 書かせる, 行く → 行かせる
Group 2drop る, add させる食べる → 食べさせる
Irregularする → させる, 来る → 来させる

Make, or let?

The same form

母(はは)は子供(こども)に野菜(やさい)を食(た)べさせました。Haha wa kodomo ni yasai o tabesasemashita.

The mother made her child eat vegetables.

A context of forcing.

母(はは)は子供(こども)に好(す)きなものを食(た)べさせました。Haha wa kodomo ni suki na mono o tabesasemashita.

The mother let her child eat what they liked.

A context of allowing.

Particles

を or に for the person

子供(こども)を走(はし)らせました。Kodomo o hashirasemashita.

I made the kids run.

With a verb that has no object, を is common, regardless of their wishes.

子供(こども)に走(はし)らせました。Kodomo ni hashirasemashita.

I let the kids run.

に suggests they acted willingly.

子供(こども)に本(ほん)を読(よ)ませました。Kodomo ni hon o yomasemashita.

I made the kids read a book.

When there's already a を, the person must take に.

Asking permission

With て form + helpers

私(わたし)に行(い)かせてください。Watashi ni ikasete kudasai.

Please let me go.

少(すこ)し考(かんが)えさせてください。Sukoshi kangaesasete kudasai.

Please let me think a while.

ご案内(あんない)させていただきます。Goannai sasete itadakimasu.

Allow me to show you the way.

Very humble.

息子(むすこ)に手伝(てつだ)わせてもらいました。Musuko ni tetsudawasete moraimashita.

I got my son to help.

Being made to

Causative + passive

友(とも)だちにお酒(さけ)を飲(の)まされました。Tomodachi ni osake o nomasaremashita.

I was made to drink by my friends.

You didn't want to. Group 1 often shortens from 飲ませられる to 飲まされる.

先生(せんせい)に歌(うた)を歌(うた)わされました。Sensei ni uta o utawasaremashita.

I was made to sing by my teacher.

母(はは)に部屋(へや)を掃除(そうじ)させられました。Haha ni heya o souji saseraremashita.

I was made to clean my room by my mother.

Group 2 and する use させられる.

A shorter form

~す, often more direct

母(はは)は子供(こども)に薬(くすり)を飲(の)ませました。Haha wa kodomo ni kusuri o nomasemashita.

The mother had her child take the medicine.

The standard form.

母(はは)は子供(こども)に薬(くすり)を飲(の)ましました。Haha wa kodomo ni kusuri o nomashimashita.

The mother made her child take the medicine.

飲ます works as a group 1 verb, and often feels more hands-on.

Watch the status

Who can make whom

Causatives go downward, so you make a child or a junior do something. You wouldn't use it of your boss or teacher: ask for a favor with ~ていただく instead. To make things or change their state, Japanese also uses it: 花を咲かせる, “to make flowers bloom.”

Your friend asks about your kids. You let them play outside, you make them do homework, and you were made to study piano by your own mother.
